FABRIC NARCOTICS - DRU BOWITZ

“BE YOU NOT THE EGO“ DRU

Dru Bowitz recently answered a couple questions for The Ghetto Flower in an interview that exposes much more than his work as a fashion designer and entrepreneur, diving into his hardships and artistic inspirations and life living in Chicago.

The man behind FABRIC NARCOTICS lets it all out through a number of topics, ranging from his favorite pieces of work, to what got him started with this all. Elsewhere, Dru talks humble beginnings and capitalizing on an ever growing hobby. The conversation makes for a great read and offers a different point of view into the brilliant mind of Dru.

Check out the best excerpts from the interview below.

What is your name and age? Where are you from ?

“My name is Dru and I'm 28 years old, I'm originally from Rockford,IL but I've been living in the city for about 5 years now”

ON getting into fashion and clothing design?

I was doing custom pieces of artwork for people, mostly paintings on canvas. I decided to put my own little design on a tee and sell it on Facebook and it ended up selling out.

I wanted to wear something personal and from there I decided to learn about the business and learn all the design programs and how to print and source materials. It's turned into something I truly love now.

ON Fashion/Artistic inspirations?

I've always like Nigo growing up and it bummed me out when he left BAPE. Virgil of course is a big one, everything that he has done from the position he holds now to doing people's tour merch, shits pretty cool. All of Kaws' work is amazing and he continues to amaze me with his pieces. My friends are big inspirations too, seeing them do well gets me hyped up. Many various graffiti artists as well too. RIP Zexor

ON obstacles YOu’ overcome on your journey thus far?

The list is long from just bad luck in certain things to catching a case (my fault obviously) but I think it's speed bumps we all go through in life.

It's important to not get discouraged by setbacks. It's a marathon not a sprint. Most of the obstacles I face now are all inside my head, whether it's uncertainty about putting out a collection or fear of something sucking, it's all internal inside my head now for the most part lol

How did you come up with the name Fabric Narcotics?

Well when I made my first ever small run of shirts I was bagging them up in gallon size Ziploc bags to deliver to whoever purchased them, thats kinda where the whole idea of the name stemmed from. I used the Ziploc bags because I always saw the dust bags that BAPE used to ship shirts and wanted to protect the product but had no idea where to get bags like that so I went to the corner store and bought Ziplocs lol

Which piece of yours is your favorite?

I would have to say this fur jacket/overcoat that I did a couple months ago, it came out really beautiful. I also did an acid washed denim jacket too that came out super raw. I had alot of fun with those 2 pieces and they sold before I could post them. Those are my 2 favorite pieces right now but that could easily change by tomorrow lol
