Overachiever, Underachiever, or Just another Throwaway Artist?

In his return to the TGF page, we have Chicago rapper, Jay Wood who is offering us a look into his musical process and giving us his latest single “Overachiever.” If you’re well-rounded in the music scene in Chicago, Jay is someone who has had their name buzzing for a while. In the 2 years since last being featured Jay has done an interview with Lyrical Lemonade, illanoize Radio, countless shows under his belt, and even been a part of some big modeling gigs. Jay has described his music as more alternative melodic rap which perfectly fits because some of his biggest inspirations include Kanye West, 50 Cent, Childish Gambino, and Tyler the Creator. Then Jay described his writing process as not necessarily having a chosen topic upon writing, but figuring out what everything means as he gets deeper into the process.

As for Jay’s single “Overachiever” it’s described as a song about trials and tribulations. A set of lyrics to go with that theme include “Everything is going as I planned it, I ain’t mad at a bump in the road, I ain’t mad at you dawg I understand it.” Lyrics like this can be heard all throughout the song, on an amazing bouncy “IDK” “Vince Staples” type beat which was done by Chicago producer “Namesake.” Jay would go on to tell me that, during the recording for “Overachiever” the song “Kamikaze” by Omar Apollo was one of the only other songs that were being played. So maybe if you play the songs back-to-back, you might just hear a hint of inspiration from “Kamikaze” for “Overachiever.” Finally, to add to the trials and tribulations theme, Jay includes an outro in the song where his father is giving him advice and praising Jay.

All in all, we know Jay isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and like any perfectionist, he’s going to continue to try and be an overachiever!
