SANCTUARY - King Melik

On November 13, Southside Chicago artist, King Melik released his EP single “SANCTUARY” featuring fellow Chicago artists, SONNY, Supa Bwe, Senite, and more.

“SANCTUARY” is one of those projects that can pull you into a new reality, King Melik really perfected his craft and created an unforgettable experience.

From the jump, King Melik sets his pace with a heavy-hitting intro, “Broken Promises Are Lies“. This track sounds like something right out of Kanye’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”, 808s with a layered autotune add a futuristic, alternative rap vibe.

He follows up this top-notch quality with multiple stand-out tracks like, “Angels” (my personal favorite), Romeo//Juliet, and Sing For Me.

2022 has been a huge year for the underground king, releasing a number of other notable drops as the year has gone on.

If you somehow aren’t familiar with him, you need to know that he is one of the hottest up n coming acts out of the Southside of Chicago, he is spearheading the microgenre that one may classify as “alternative rap” and while this moment in time might be a few years gone, the specific sound is as alive and well as always.

This is demonstrated in King Melik’s long-awaited project Sanctuary, and so is the respect he pays to the lush history of the local Chicago music scene.

Not to mention that the effort is 10 songs that last almost 33 minutes long, so if you’re familiar with King Melik's (aka Kizzy) abilities, you know that this is a project that could take weeks to divulge through to really break down all of the creativity and artistry that is incorporated throughout. From the vocals and production, to live instruments, this is definitely a project that deserves your undivided attention.

With that being said, Sanctuary is certainly one of the best things you’ll hear all week, but it’s also something that up-and-coming artists should really dissect and study if they want to learn what it takes to stand out just like King Melik has accomplished throughout his early career.

To support the release of his latest EP, King Melik celebrated his project with an exclusive listening party at Fourtune House Art Center located on the city's south side, in Bronzeville.
