Jams The Flava Child

The Flava Child describes his music as “refreshing and personable.” He’s been making music since he was a teenager, and over the years has made a conscious effort to craft a sound that’s uniquely his own. He calls this sound “MidWest Coast” (that was also the name of his 2022 album) and it’s been created by blending a few things that he loves and deeply values; West Coast production styles, Midwestern sensibilities and the Chicago city life.

This past March, JAMS performed at SXSW, which was his first festival experience, and he just wrapped up a tour in July. “I take a lot of pride in being a real performer,” he says. While at SXSW, he was surprised that out of the 50 to 60 rappers who were on the bill, he was one of the few who did all live vocals. He says that he’s always investing in his craft and that he does prefer to perform with a live band. “I’ll be playing with a live band at Navy Pier for sure,” he says.

His time on the road, as well as the two years he’s spent living in LA, has shown him how valuable it is to have a solid fan base at home. JAMS says that his best shows are always in Chicago so he’s excited to perform at Navy Pier. In fact, he was intentional about making this the only Chicago show he booked for the summer.

JAMS says that he has much respect for TGF “leading the charge” in the city, in terms of providing platforms for upcoming talent.  “It’s really important for things like The Ghetto Flower to exist in Chicago to make artists feel like [they’re getting] the right type of attention on their music,” he says. “If you’re working really hard, investing in yourself and you make really dope shit, your city should shine a little light on it.”
